We went on a lot of day trips from Madrid (where we were staying in the dorms) and also a few weekend trips. We went on a day trip to El Escorial right after Tim finished up his classes for the day. The highlight of El Escorial is the cathedral there. We weren't allowed to take many pictures inside but we saw some really neat things. The capital of Spain used to be in El Escorial so that is where they have a HUGE tomb of all of their royalty... including kings, queens, princes, princesses, and they had a special tomb for all of the children who died before age 11 (why 11 is significant I have no idea :)). They had these amazing gardens that we would have loved to walk through but we didn't have enough time so we snuck some pictures from out the window and off a little look-out point after we left.
This is inside a little courtyard.
This is a view of one part of the outside from one of the windows. You can see the mountain, part of the city and some of the gardens.
Isn't this wall SOOO cool? I had to get a close-up :)
I had gone down a hallway to go to the bathroom and found this! No one was around so we took a picture! :) It is a wall of murals!
We walked out into another courtyard and then our friend Tamara asked if we got to see the stairway. Since we took a new way out we had missed it so we went back in and were glad we did!
This is what the ceiling above the stairway looked like!
Here is a close-up so maybe you can see it better. I don't know if you can tell but it looked 3D! Tim kept getting mad at me for taking pictures but no one was around and I really wanted to remember it! :) Maybe you just had to be there, but isn't it soooo cool!?
Here is one half of the outside... if we attached a picture to the left side of this one it would look the same on the other side... but it was TOO HUGE to get the whole thing in! I definitely got my walking in for the day! :)
Tim had to put his backpack in a locker and this is what the key looked like... cool, huh!? (I know, I am obsessed with keys!:))
Another view of the gardens :) (everyone had to wear those yellow stickers to say that you paid...in case you are wondering what we are doing with yellow stickers stuck to our shirts :))
They had these really cool cobble stone streets in El Escorial so we had to get a picture! :)
